The Alabama Broadcasters Association awarded 92.7 The Bee two ABBY Awards Saturday night in Birmingham. The station won both categories entered, those being best commercial and best regularly scheduled newscast.
Our winning commercial is the jingle for Jolly Dan’s Hardware and General Store, and the winning newscast is our Around the Town News. Station owner Evan Tidwell accepted the awards on stage, and in his acceptance speech for the newscast award paid tribute to the late WJBB owner John Slatton. Slatton started airing Around The Town News in 1954 when he took over the management of the station, and was active in the Alabama Broadcasters Association his entire career.
The awards dinner was held at The Club atop Red Mountain in Birmingham, and gathered together broadcasters from radio and television stations across the state. This year’s awards were a hallmark year, being the 20th annual awards gala hosted by the ABA. The association itself is also having an anniversary this year, marking 80 years of service to broadcasters and the people of Alabama.
The Bee wants to say thank you to the out-of-state judges for appreciating our work, to you our listener for your attention and encouragement, and to our sponsors for their support of our station and its service. We couldn’t do this without you!
