This former gas station is one of the properties currently involved in the grant application by request of the property owners. The derelict motel on Highway 13 South is the other.
The Haleyville City Council held a public hearing prior to their regular meeting on Monday, April 20th to seek public input about a demolition grant available through the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs.
The community development block grant will provide funding to demolish blighted structures in the City of Haleyville, at no cost to the property owner and without any liens or other restrictions placed on the property. Property owners can request to be included in the program, have a blighted structure demolished at no cost to them, and the property will be cleaned and seeded with grass. At that point the property owner is free to begin redevelopment of the property, place it on the market for sale, or leave it as a greenspace.
Mayor Ray Boshell said the city will be applying for the grant in July with the assistance of NACOLG and currently have two properties that will be included in the grant. Those being the old motel on Highway 13 South, and the old gas station on 13 North near the railroad overpass. Any property owner in Haleyville may contact City Clerk Christy Harbin at 205-486-3121 if they have questions or wish to be included in the program.
