Sarah Ruth McGough Courington passed away peacefully on July 20, 2025, surrounded by her daughters. Born on September 14, 1942, Ruth lived a life marked by devotion to her family.
She was the loving mother of three children: Renee Courington, Donna Courington, and the late David Scott Courington. Ruth was a proud grandmother to Hannah Wendlandt, Ben Wendlandt, Alex Beaver, Anna Beaver, and Olivia Courington, and she treasured every moment spent with them. She is also survived by her beloved daughter-in-law, Analiza Courington, and her devoted son-in-law, David Beaver.
Valuing education, Ruth encouraged her children to pursue higher learning and was quietly proud that each of them earned a degree from the University of Alabama. She extended that same encouragement to her grandchildren, always supporting their goals and celebrating their progress.
Throughout her life, Ruth was actively involved in her community. She served as a Cub Scout and Explorer Scout leader, was a dedicated Lynn High School Band Booster, and even volunteered as a firefighter with the Lynn Volunteer Fire Department.
Ruth is survived by her brother Dale McGough and his wife Linda, sister June Cook, sister-in-law Judy McGough, and dozens of beloved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Emmie and Richard McGough; her son, David Scott Courington; her siblings Robert McGough, Roger McGough, Jean McGough Green, W.O. Dodd, and Bernice Rowell; and her beloved aunt, Linnie Sparks.
Her family will fondly remember Ruth’s fierce independent streak and stubbornness—qualities that shaped her life, grounded her convictions, and helped her face challenges with resilience and clarity.
Her visitation will be Saturday August 2, 2025 from 1:00PM – 2:00PM at Pinkard Funeral Home in Haleyville, AL. Funeral service at 2:00PM in the chapel, with Ricky Thrasher officiating. Burial to follow in Winston Memorial Cemetery in Haleyville, AL.
