Melba Cavender, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and heart of her family, passed away peacefully on Saturday January 31, 2026. She was a member of Waldrop Freewill Baptist Church.
Her visitation will be Friday February 6, 2026 from 12:00 NOON – 1:00 PM at Pinkard Funeral Home in Haleyville, AL. Funeral service at 1:00 PM in the chapel, with Bro. Joseph Boyles officiating. Burial to follow in Winston Memorial Cemetery.
Born in Bear Creek, AL., Melba lived a life full of love, devotion and quiet strength. She was the cherished wife of Ray Cavender, with whom she shared decades of partnership and joy. Together, they raised three wonderful adult children, Barbara Crossland, Becky Spain and Phillip Cavender. Melba’s greatest pride and joy were her family. She adored her five grandchildren, Matthew Taylor, Skye Cavender, Justin Crossland, Amanda Holcomb and Victoria Cavender and her step-grandchildren, Lauren Wood, Emily Foy, Harrison Wood and John Austin Wood, who brought light and laughter into her world every day; she is also survived by her sisters and brothers, Linda Landers, Shelia MacQuarrie, Billy Pike, Jimmy Preston and J.L. Preston. and a wide circle of extended family and friends who were blessed to know her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, James Lofton Preston and Arvis June Pike Preston; her sisters, Jo Evans, Margaret Doss and Faye Smith; her brother, Charles Preston; and her precious granddaughter, Jamie Crossland and daughter in law, Rachel Cavender whose memories she carried with tender love.
Melba will be remembered for her unwavering love. her gentle spirit, and they way she made everyone around her feel valued and cared for. He home was always open, her hugs always ready, and her faith a steady guide.
The family asks for prayers and quiet support as we grieve and celebrate a life beautifully lived.
