The Haleyville City Council met for their regular meeting on Monday, May 4th with all members present. Those being Mayor Ray Boshell and council members Todd Barton, Cade Lewis, Colton Corum, Julie “Boo” Brooks, and Brian Berry.
Mayor Boshell read a proclamation naming May as Mental Health Month in Haleyville, and presented it to Chris Prince, director of Winston County Adult Outpatient, and Amy Armstrong, clinical director for intellectual disability services.
The council approved the minutes of the previous meeting, then approved a city employee drug policy that clarifies the use of medicinal cannabis that is legal under state law. The policy prohibits the use of such medication while on the job operating heavy equipment, etc. Mayor Ray Boshell said the policy would not interfere with any person’s legal off-duty use of medicinal cannabis or contradict state law.
Councilman Brian Berry gave an update on events in the Heart of Haleyville Park. Berry said the city has started their spring and summer events with the “Singo” music bingo night, and an Elvis tribute concert by Dawson Horn.
Berry recognized event planner Jim Farris and invited him to speak. Farris said he and Dawson’s father Drew Horn got the event together to raise money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital with a goal of $1,000. Farris said they met and almost doubled the goal, with final contributions totaling $1,850.
Mayor Boshell recognized city hall staff for Municipal Clerks Week, and the Haleyville Fire Department on International Firefighters Day, which is today, May 4th.
Immediately prior to adjournment, healthcare authority board member Barry Tidwell spoke about a planned trip to Mississippi this week, to meet with hospital officials at a critical access facility in Tippah County. Since Lakeland Community Hospital is transitioning to critical care, Tidwell said he and his group will gather information about the successes and failures the other hospital has seen in the past 11 years, in order to be better informed on decisions facing our local hospital.
