The Haleyville City Council met at noon on Tuesday, August 11th with all members present. The council approved the minutes of their previous meeting, with councilman Colton Corum abstaining due to his absence at that meeting.
City Clerk and Election Official Christy Harbin canvassed the results of the election, and stated two absentee ballots had been disqualified. The remaining two ballots were one for Bobby Crook and one for Beth McAlpine.
The council unanimously certified the results of the School Board Election, with Beth McAlpine as the winner.
Mayor Ray Boshell then asked city engineer Chris Wilbanks to give some data on the costs of street paving, both having a contractor do the work and the city paving it themselves. The council approved moving forward on obtaining paving equipment. Councilmen Cade Lewis and Colton Corum voted no on the measure, with Todd barton, Mayor Ray Boshell, Julie Brooks, and Brian Berry voting yes.
The council approved a measure to pursue a gym for city employees to use, and to purchase pagers for the fire department. The council welcomed Haleyville’s new Fire Chief Coby Wiginton, and Wiginton stated many of the firefighters are having to use their personal phones to receive emergency calls. Chief Wiginton said these pagers would provide a more reliable method of communication and improve response times.
The council also approved moving forward with a partnership between the Winston County Commission and other municipalities to build an animal shelter for the area. Commission Chairman David Cummings spoke on the county’s intentions and is asking the towns in the area for their support.
