The Haleyville City Council held their regular meeting at 5:30 pm on July 7th with all members present. The council approved four resolutions, one to purchase two police cars for the Haleyville Police Department in the amount of $116,619.00, and three to vacate rights of way for certain unused streets in the city. Those streets being portions of Foundren Avenue, Basom Avenue, and an unnamed road near the sportsplex. Details of the properties are included below.
All resolutions passed unanimously.
Upon completion of the regular agenda, Mayor Ken Sunseri asked for comments from council members and the public. Councilman Brian Berry thanked everyone for attending the “Deal or No Deal” gameshow night in the Heart of Haleyville Park, part of the Haleyville Hometown Summer series. Berry invited everyone to attend the next event in the series, Bingo Night this coming Saturday.
Berry said Bingo night will take place from 6pm to 8pm this Saturday, with anyone 13 and up invited to play for free. Rain location will be the city hall basement.
Councilwoman Julie “Boo” Brooks thanked the sponsors of Bingo Night for the prizes to be won.
Councilman Drew Thrasher gave a brief update on the calls that the Haleyville Police Department worked in June.
Mayor Ken Sunseri announced the resignation of a dispatcher from the police department, and said the job opening will be posted soon. Sunseri also gave an overview of the animal control efforts in the city, such as plans for pet registration and citations for animals running loose. Sunseri also announced the Haleyville police officer receiving specialized training, which we previously reported on.
City Attorney Jeff Mobley announced a scam has been reported to the city. Mobley said a company is going around town offering a free roof inspection, then presenting a contract where the company will file a claim with insurance on your behalf. Mobley said the contract is misleading as it says the homeowner will agree to use that company’s services or pay $500 fee if the homeowner decides to not use their services. The company states it is located in Tupelo, Mississippi and Hendersonville, Tennessee. Both Mobley and City Clerk Kristi Harbin say the company is not qualified to do business in Haleyville.
The next council meeting will be Monday, July 21 at 5:30 pm.
