At the city council meeting held Monday, May 5th, Haleyville Mayor Ken Sunseri issued a proclamation naming May 6th through 12th as Nurses Week in the city. The proclamation is in support of the American Nurses Association’s week that celebrates nurses and their service to their communities. The mayor presented the proclamation to Cherie Sibley, CEO of Lakeland Community Hospital.
In other business, the council approved a contract with Jim Farris Pressure Washing for cleaning city property in the downtown area prior to next month’s 911 Festival at a total cost of $3,800.
The council approved a resolution making Juneteenth a city holiday to align with current federal and state schedules.
They also approved an expenditure of $8,736 to purchase new computers for the police department.
In the public comment period, there was a discussion between members of the public, Mayor Ken Sunseri, Councilman Dr. Ray Boshell, and City Attorney Jeff Mobley about the city’s plans for animal control. The mayor gave a brief overview of problems the city faces mainly with dogs running loose, and the difficulty in enforcing leash laws.
The city is currently awaiting state approval to send a police officer to animal control training in Tennessee in order to handle animal complaints. The next step would be to obtain a facility to hold animals until they could be transported to a shelter. The mayor said he doesn’t want that to be a tiny cage or crate. Currently an animal must be held for seven days to allow an owner to claim it before it can be offered for adoption.
All resolutions passed unanimously with Councilman Blue Russell absent.
