The Franklin County Sheriff’s Department in Russellville says they are receiving numerous complaints about people calling local residents and representing themselves as employees of the Sheriff’s office.
These individuals are telling people that they have a warrant for their arrest, and they must pay money to avoid being arrested. They instruct people to get a prepaid debit card and give them the numbers. The number that shows on caller ID is a Franklin County Sheriff’s Office phone number, faked using software.
The Sheriff reminds you that no one from the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office will call and tell you that you need to give money to avoid arrest.
Another one of the recent scams told someone that they missed jury duty and had to pay money to avoid arrest. These individuals are insistent, sound knowledgeable about our employees and local elected officials, and persistent in making sure they scam whoever they can out of money.
Investigators are working to try and identify these people. If you get a phone call from someone representing themselves as someone from a law enforcement agency and they ask for money, just hang up.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact Investigator Colt Montgomery at 256-332-8825, extension 3.
